Women's Basketball Opens C-USA Play At Memphis Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team will open its Conference USA schedule on Sunday afternoon at Memphis. The Blazers and the Tigers will tip off at 1 p.m. CT at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The game will be televised live on CBS College Sports (CBSC), as well as Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast (CSS).
Sunday will mark the 41st meeting between UAB and Memphis, with the Tigers leading the all-time series, 24-16. The Blazers have won the past four meetings, including a 72-66 victory over the Tigers a season ago in Memphis.
UAB has a 5-8 overall record as it enters Sunday's game. The Blazers dropped their last outing, 87-46, at Mississippi State this past Friday.
Senior guard Britney Jones leads UAB in scoring with 15.8 ppg, while also adding 3.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.0 steals per contest. Sophomore guard Amanda Peterson is chipping in 12.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for the Blazers. Peterson is UAB's top three-point threat, sinking 36 baskets from beyond the arc this year.
Junior guard Fatiha Salaam rounds out UAB's double-digit scorers, averaging 10.8 ppg this season. Salaam is shooting 36.0 percent from the field and is one of the Blazers' top free throw shooters, hitting 75.0 percent from the charity stripe.
Memphis enters the contest with a 7-6 overall record. The Tigers won their last outing, 63-61, at Tennessee Tech this past Tuesday.
Paris Leonard leads Memphis in scoring with 16.2 points per contest, while also adding a team-best 2.7 steals per game. Ashley Thornton is shooting 46.2 percent on the year for 10.3 ppg. Thornton is pacing the Tigers on the boards, pulling down 8.5 rpg.
