Blazer tennis team sweeps doubles play at Samford Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team swept all nine doubles matches it played Friday at the Samford Spring Invitational.
The No. 74-ranked Blazers put together a perfect record as they played their first matches of the 2009 season. The Samford tournament is a round-robin event featuring UAB, the host Bulldogs and Jacksonville State.
In doubles play at the No. 1 flight, UAB's tandem of Alex Emery and Brian Ly, ranked No. 29 nationally, downed Jacksonville State's Bernardo Bachino and Gustavo Holz, 8-4, in their first match of the day. Later, Emery and Ly defeated Kelwin DeWet and Brian Dushock, 8-6.
At the No. 2 flight, the Blazer duo of Dan Cornei and Daniel Moser were winners over Scott Robertson and Eduardo Suratt of Jacksonville State, 8-3, and then disposed of the Bulldogs' Michael Browder and Richard Walsh, 8-6.
At the No. 3 doubles flight, the Blazers' team of sophomore Slawomir Szeremeta and freshman Dennis Ehrlich, who enrolled this semester at UAB, won by an 8-2 score over JSU's Chris Duke and Steffen Solomon in their first match of the day. Later, the Blazers' duo downed the Samford team of Carl Abalos and Oliver Reynolds, 9-7.
In play at Flight No. 4, UAB's Thomas Petrich teamed with Tyrone Ewels to beat the JSU tandem of Thomas Bellman and Brian Kenyon, 8-5. Petrich also partnered with John Hollimon to edge the Samford duo of Adam Witcher and Carson Kadi, 9-8.
Play will resume Saturday at 9:00 a.m. when singles action begins.
