PLEASANT VALLEY, Iowa - UAB golfer Mike Oimoen continues his hot play this summer, as the rising senior captured the 2008 Iowa State Amateur Championship earlier in the week. The Clear Lake, Iowa native, who captured the title for a second time, won after the first hole of sudden death with a par on No. 18.
Oimoen went to a playoff against Iowa State-bound Michael Wuertz after both golfers finished at one-over par 211 at the 54-hole event. Oimoen could have easily not won the event, as he called a penalty on himself after only he saw his ball move slightly on the No. 8 green after he addressed it with his putter during last Tuesday's final round.
"I beat a lot of good players in Iowa today," Oimoen said. "It's a great honor to win this championship.
"The other two guys didn't see it and I saw it," Oimoen told the media following the round on calling a penalty stroke on himself. "I couldn't sleep at night knowing I cheated on a golf course. That's golf. It's a game of honor."
Oimoen two-putted from 30-feet out to make par on the first playoff hole, while Wuertz missed a four-foot putt to extend the match.
