BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Former UAB golfer Graeme McDowell owns a share of the lead at the 2008 British Open at Royal Birkdale following Thursday's opening round. McDowell fired a 1-under 69 thanks to back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18.
McDowell will enter Friday's second round in a three-way tie for the lead with U.S. Open runner-up Rocco Mediate and Robert Allenby.
The former Blazer McDowell was consistent all day in what were difficult playing conditions. On the day, McDowell posted 15 pars and just one bogie before closing out his round with the consecutive birdies.
Fresh off a victory at the Scottish Open last weekend, McDowell is looking to win a major championship that he has fared well at in the past. In 2005, McDowell finished in 11th place overall.
