BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Two University of Alabama at Birmingham soccer players have been recognized as All-American Athletes by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). The awards for the All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year were given to senior Jenny Meyer and junior Mark Stachelski.
Both athletes were two of 239 collegiate athletes from 165 schools to receive the award. Senior defender Meyer, an Orlando native, was nominated by her strength and conditioning coach Stacey Torman.
"Jenny is one of the fastest athletes I have ever worked with," Torman said. "She is mechanically sound, always in great condition but always ready to extend herself out of her comfort zone. She is a true student of strength and conditioning and soccer."
Stachelski, a Hoover native, was also tabbed for the award. The junior defender was nominated by Torman.
"Mark has a `never say die' attitude which is well respected and contagious amongst his teammates," said Torman. "His attention to detail and willingness to get it right the first time has helped build UAB soccer into a highly respected team across the country."
Stachelski becomes the fourth UAB men's soccer player to earn the accolade, joining former Blazers Tony McManus, who gathered the award in 2004, Houston Smith, who captured the honor in 2001, and Mats Hagedorn, a 1995 recipient. Meyer is the first women's soccer player in program history to be recognized by the NSCA.
The NSCA All-American Athlete of the Year Award program is in its 29th year.
