UAB Celebrates Senior Class At Annual Banquet Monday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB Athletics Department held its annual Senior Banquet on Monday evening at the Wynfrey Hotel. The event serves as a time to celebrate and honor the accomplishments of UAB's 2008 Senior Class.
In addition to awarding the seniors with their senior gifts, individual post-eligibility scholarship awards were handed out during the evening. Those awards included:
Ralph Holmes Memorial Award - Paul Jones (Baseball)
Mervyn Goldstein Memorial Scholarship - LaKitha Murray (Women's Basketball)
Jerry & Barbara Hallerman Memorial Scholarship - Frank Holmes (Men's Basketball)
Harry "The Hat" Walker Memorial Scholarship - Phil Bell (Baseball)
Dorsey-Gallichio Endowed Athletic Scholarship - Brandon Wallace (Baseball)
Lillyan Fahy Scholarship - Tara Colvin (Track & Field)
George "Snoozy" Jones Scholarship - Zach Britten (Football)
Wayne "Smitty" Smith Memorial Scholarship - Jo Arnold (Football)
Gene Bartow Scholarship - Jill Porto (Women's Soccer)
Jerry D. Young Memorial Scholarship - Jennifer Nelson (Softball)
SAAC Award - Holly Krzan (Softball)
Also earning accolades that evening were Brandon Wallace and Tracy Rowan, who were named the Male and Female Athlete Scholar Athletes Of The Year, respectively, for the highest GPA of the senior class.
Wallace, a right-handed pitcher on the UAB baseball team, has won three career games for the Blazers and has pitched nearly 100 innings in his two seasons with the team. He has made 11 career starts and tallied 35 strikeouts. In addition to his performance on the mound, Wallace has excelled in the classroom and was a Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree last season.
Rowan is a member of the Blazers' cross country and track & field programs. During her career, she has served as a valuable member of her teams, including tallying the two best high jump marks on the squad her junior year. Rowan has also been selected to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and earned the Academic Medal of Honor.
Also recognized during the event was a pair of honorary letterwinners, including Rusty Schumacher and Bill Tevendale.
