EL PASO, Texas - UAB freshman Jaime Brabb shot an even-par 72 to help lead the Blazer women's golf team to a sixth place effort here Monday in the opening round of the 2008 Texas Roadhouse Conference USA Championships. The Blazers fired a first-day score of 306 and are just five shots off the lead held by Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles lead the tournament at 301, followed by East Carolina, UCF and UTEP tied for the second spot with first-round scores of 303.
"We played some of our best golf of the season today," said UAB head coach Kim Wilcox. "We are in sixth place, but just five strokes behind the leader. Everyone is bunched up in the middle there, separated by just a few strokes."
Brabb leads the Blazers and is in a three-way tie for first place after 18 holes with her round of 72. Sophomore Carolyn Cochran is tied for the 14th position after carding a four-over 76.
Junior Christina Wentworth and freshman Lindsay Taylor are deadlocked for the 32nd spot after shooting identical rounds of 79. Junior Alyson Mitchell is in 44th place with a first-round score of 90.
