Marshall Jumps Out Early For Series Victory

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. --- The UAB softball team fell behind early and never recovered, eventually falling 11-0 to Marshall in five innings at Dot Hicks Field. The Herd won their second game to take the series.
The Blazers 23-27 and 8-10 in the league after the series lost. The Herd improves to 19-25 and 8-8 in the conference.
"We didn't come out like we needed to today," head coach Marla Townsend said. "That first inning really put us behind and we didn't respond like we needed to."
Jennifer Nelson struck out Melanie Stoehr in the first for her 200th strikeout of the season. The lefty finished with three batters retired on strikes. Nelson is the first Blazer pitcher to strikeout 200 or more in three seasons.
Leigh Walker, Kayla Harris and Kayla Orr each singled. Walker extended her hitting-streak to four games, while Orr has hit in each of her last three games.
Marshall scored six runs in the first inning taking a commanding lead. The Herd scored a run in the third and four runs in the fourth. Rachel Sofie went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs for the Herd. Marcena Bertoldo, Deanna Tourville and Samantha Rodriguez each had two RBI for Marshall. Samantha Rodriguez's only hit was a two-run homer.
Nelson (13-18) threw 3 1-3 innings and loss for the first time in four starts. Corrie Jackson took the victory after losing Saturday's start.
UAB had three hits compared to Marshall's nine hits. The Blazers left three runners on base and just one inning where they had two runners on base.
The Blazers host Troy Thursday at George Ward Park in their final non-conference games of the year.
