CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The UAB women's tennis team earned a 6-1 victory at Chattanooga on Sunday to improve to 4-0 on the year. Freshman Evelien Strijker earned two wins in the match, including a convincing 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles.
Chattanooga drops to 4-3 with the loss.
UAB was able to sneak out the doubles point when senior Antonia Nugent and Strijker won 8-6 at No. 1. Senior Seden Soyalp and freshman Jenny Cape recorded the team's first doubles victory by winning 8-2 at flight three.
Senior Gulsah Esen and freshman Giorgia Romeo lost a close 8-6 decision at No. 2.
"I thought we struggled in doubles a little bit," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "We still managed to get the doubles point and I think that built the momentum we needed going into singles. This was our first time playing indoors this season, so that may have had something to do with our struggles in doubles. Fortunately, we came out and played very well in singles."
Led by Strijker's win at No. 2, the Blazers pulled away in singles. Nugent won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3, while Cape won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4.
At flight five, after running away with the first set, Soyalp was pushed in the second but was able to hold on for the 6-1, 7-5 victory. Romeo won 6-4, 6-0 at flight six.
Esen was the only Blazer to lose in singles as she lost at No. 1, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
The Blazers will next be in action on Saturday when they play at Samford at 1:00 a.m.
