TEXARKANA, Ark. ----- The UAB softball team capped off a successful weekend here Sunday by splitting a doubleheader with Oklahoma State at the Century Bank Classic. The Blazers won four-of-six games here in the four-team event.
The Blazers (5-2) hit two home runs in the first game on their way to a 3-2 victory. UAB dropped the second game, 2-0.
"We are definitely excited about our results so far," head coach Marla Townsend said. "I'm proud of all the good things our team accomplished this week. There are things that we still need to work on if we can become the team that I know we are capable of."
The Blazers scored three runs with two swings on the bat, erasing a one-run deficit and taking a 3-1 lead in the first game.
Nelson tied the score with her second-career home run to start the rally for the Blazers in the sixth. Laura Callaway doubled to deep right center, and Leigh Walker broke out of her slump with a game-winning two-run homer that just cleared the centerfield wall. The hit was the first of the season for the senior.
Nelson (3-1) also earned the victory. She pitched seven innings and struck out 13, and allowed five hits. In her last two starts, Nelson has 22 strikeouts. She also recorded four in game two, giving her a total of 40 in the Blazers first seven games.
UAB held off two potential rallies by Oklahoma State (3-3) in the sixth and seventh innings in its victory. The Cowgirls pulled within a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and left the tying run at third base. OSU left two runners on in the sixth.
The Blazers fell in game two, but had their best chance to score runs since the first inning. Two fly balls to right end those chances. UAB left the bases loaded in the first.
OSU broke the scoreless tie in the fourth with two runs. Nelson, pitching in relief for UAB, ended the inning with a strikeout.
Kayla Harris (2-1) took the loss as she gave up seven hits in 3 2-3 innings.
The Blazers' next action will come on Tuesday when they play at Jacksonville State in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
