BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Sophomore women's basketball player Kara Johnson has been selected as the UAB Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
A guard from Greensboro, Ala., Johnson has played in three games this season for the Blazers. She scored her first collegiate points Nov. 26 with a pair of free throws against then-No. 15 Auburn.
Johnson came to UAB after a successful high school career in both athletics and academics. A three-sport athlete at Greensboro West High School, she was also class valedictorian, class president and president of the National Honor Society.
As a freshman at UAB in 2007-08, Johnson continued her strong work in the classroom. She was named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and also earned the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal.
Johnson and the Blazers are off this week for final exams. The team returns to the court Monday, Dec. 15 on the first day of the Blazer Invitational. UAB will face Alabama State at 6 p.m. CT.
