UAB vs. Mississippi State Game Notes
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team will begin the new year with its final non-conference game of the season at Mississippi State on Friday evening. Tip-off between the Blazers and the Lady Bulldogs is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville, Miss.
Friday will mark the 27th meeting between UAB and Mississippi State, with the all-time series tied at 13-13. The Lady Bulldogs won the last meeting, 79-69, a season ago in Birmingham. However, the Blazers won the last matchup in Starkville, 76-70, on Dec. 3, 2006.
After playing its last four games at home, UAB will hit the road with a 5-7 overall record. The Blazers are coming off a 65-53 win over Alabama A&M this past Monday.
Senior guard Britney Jones leads UAB with 15.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Jones has scored in double figures eight times this season, including three 20-plus point efforts.
Sophomore guard Amanda Peterson is the Blazers' top three-point threat, sinking 33 treys this season and averaging 12.3 ppg overall. Peterson is also one of UAB's top rebounders, leading the Blazers on the boards in three games this season and ranking second on the team with 4.4 rpg.
Mississippi State started the season 11-0, but suffered its first loss of the season this past Tuesday with an 80-73 loss at No. 15 Maryland. The Lady Bulldogs are receiving votes in the latest USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll (Dec. 30).
Three players are averaging double figures for Mississippi State this season, led by Armelie Lumanu with 14.1 ppg. Lumanu is also pacing the Lady Bulldogs with 6.5 rpg and 3.1 spg.
Alexis Rack, who serves as Mississippi State's top three-point shooter with 30 treys, is adding 13.8 ppg. Chanel Mokango rounds out the Lady Bulldogs' top scoring threats with 10.9 ppg, while also adding 5.7 rpg. Mokango is shooting 53.3 percent overall this season, including 44.4 percent from three-point range and 87.1 percent from the charity stripe.
