Women's Basketball Hosts SEC Foe Georgia Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team will host its third Southeastern Conference team in a month when it takes on the Georgia Lady Bulldogs on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT at Bartow Arena.
UAB and Georgia will be meeting for the third time on the hardwood in program history. The all-time series is tied at 1-1. The Lady Bulldogs won the last meeting, 76-75, in overtime on Nov. 15, 1999 in Athens, Ga. UAB's victory over Georgia came on March 14, 1981 in the AIWA Region III Tournament in Valdosta, Ga., when the Blazers defeated the Lady Bulldogs, 82-70.
UAB enters Saturday's game with a 4-6 record, including two straight wins for the Blazers. UAB is coming off a 72-63 victory over Georgia State this past Tuesday to claim its sixth consecutive Blazer Invitational tournament title.
Leading the way for the Blazers is senior guard Britney Jones, who is averaging 15.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game from the point guard position. Jones has scored in double figures in eight games this season, including two 20-point efforts.
Junior guard Fatiha Salaam and sophomore guard Amanda Peterson are also scoring in double figures for UAB this season. Salaam is chipping in 11.9 ppg and 2.6 rpg, while Peterson is contributing 11.6 ppg and 4.0 rpg. Peterson is shooting 39.4 percent from beyond the arc and has sunk 28 treys this season, which leads Conference USA at 2.8 three-point buckets per game.
Georgia, which is receiving votes in the latest WBCA Coaches' Poll, comes into the game with a 7-3 record. The Lady Bulldogs have dropped their last two contests, including a 57-42 loss at Georgia Tech on Dec. 5 and a 45-34 loss at Rutgers on Dec. 8.
Junior guard Ashley Houts leads Georgia from the point guard position and paces the Lady Bulldogs with 12.7 ppg and 4.3 apg. Junior forward Angel Robinson, who stands at 6-5, comes off the bench to add 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game for Georgia.
Saturday will also serve as Blaze's Holiday Party at the women's basketball game. Fans attending the games will be greeted by snow and holiday decorations on the concourse of the arena. The first 250 children through the gates will receive ornaments.
Santa Claus will be in attendance and available for photos throughout both games. Free hot chocolate and candy canes will also be handed out to children.
In addition, fans with a ticket to the men's game will receive free admission to the women's game that evening.
