BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB baseball program's Green and Gold series remains tied at two games apiece after the teams split two four-inning games Saturday for the second day in a row.
Cody McMurry was the offensive standout for the Gold team with five hits Saturday, including three hits in a 3-1 victory in the first game of the day. Jamal Austin led the Green team to a 5-4 win in Saturday's second game with two hits and three RBI. Austin finished with three hits on the day.
The Green and Gold series continues Sunday at 2 p.m. with two more four-inning contests. If the series remains tied after Sunday's action, the teams will play a nine-inning game next weekend to decide a champion.
The entire series, like all of the Blazers' fall practice sessions at Young Memorial Field, is open to the public.
Game 3 Recap
The Gold team found the scoreboard first with two runs in the opening inning. Keith DePew led off the game with a single, and Austin Taylor then reached on an error. McMurry followed with his first hit of the day, a two-RBI single, to put the Gold squad on top, 2-0.
The Green team got one run back in the bottom of the first. Andrew Manning singled and moved to second on an Allen Aubin walk. Manning then scored on an RBI single from Trey Early. That run, however, was the only one the Green team could manage.
On the mound for the Gold team, Shay Crawford turned in a strong performance. Crawford pitched all four innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four batters.
The Gold squad tacked on its final run in the third inning. Singles by McMurry and Devin Hamilton along with a Kevin Cope walk loaded the bases, and Danny Volk was then hit by a pitch to bring McMurry home for the final 3-1 margin.
Game 4 Recap
Saturday's second game was the highest scoring in the series so far, and the Green team jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first two innings. Luke Stewart plated Nick Crawford with a sacrifice fly in the first. In the second, a Blake Huddleston RBI double and a run-scoring single from Austin gave the Green squad a three-run advantage.
The Gold team fought back with two runs in both the third and fourth innings. After a pair of third-inning singles from McMurry and Digger Towe, a Tristan Farrell single plated the Gold squad's first run. A walk to Hamilton then loaded the bases, and Cope brought another run home with a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the fourth, DePew got things started with a one-out triple. Austin Taylor and McMurry followed with back-to-back doubles as the Gold team took its first lead of the game at 4-3.
But the Green squad answered quickly in the bottom of the fourth and final inning. Early and Bradley Hicks singled and moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt from Huddleston. Austin then came to the plate and singled to left field, scoring both runners to give the Green team a 5-4 win.
Robert Brewster was the top performer on the mound. He pitched the first two innings for the Green team without allowing a base runner.
