BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB baseball team will hold its annual Green and Gold Series this weekend at Young Memorial Field.
The series follows a best-of-seven format with two four-inning games on Friday, two on Saturday and two on Sunday. If the series is tied after those six games, a seventh and decisive nine-inning game will be contested the following weekend.
All games are open to the public, and the action begins Friday at 2 p.m. Play continues Saturday at 11:45 a.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
"We're looking forward to seeing the guys in live game action," UAB head coach Brian Shoop said. "This is the first time this fall they've gotten to play straight up. We're hoping to play clean baseball and keep our mistakes to a minimum."
The series concludes the fifth week of a six-week fall practice period for the Blazers as they prepare for the 2009 season. UAB is looking to build on a 2008 season that saw the Blazers defeat five NCAA Regional teams and finish second in Conference USA in both team hitting and team fielding.
Fall practice has given UAB an opportunity to continue to build on those strengths as well as working toward improvement in the area of pitching.
"I think we're going to have a tough offense to get through for opposing pitchers," Shoop said. "We think our starting pitching will be the best we've had in our three years here, and we're continuing to work toward improving our depth in the bullpen."
The Blazers will continue practice for one more week following this weekend's Green and Gold Series. As always, the practice sessions are open to the public.
