Blazers To Play In Samford Classic Friday And Saturday

UAB at Samford Classic Game Notes
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team will participate in the Samford Classic Tournament over the weekend, playing a pair of first-time opponents in Evansville and McNeese State. The Blazers take on Evansville on Friday at 5 p.m. CT, followed by a game versus McNeese State on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
UAB enters the tournament with a 1-3 record and will try to rebound from its 91-62 loss to No. 15 Auburn this past Wednesday.
Senior guard Britney Jones leads the Blazers with 16.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Sophomore guard Amanda Peterson, who tallied a career-high 20 points against Auburn, is contributing 14.0 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Peterson is shooting 44.4 percent overall and 48.3 percent from beyond the arc this season.
On the boards, UAB is led by junior forward Tamika Dukes with 8.5 rpg to accompany her 11.3 ppg.
Evansville, a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, enters Friday's game with a 2-1 overall record. The Purple Aces won a pair of games over East Tennessee State and Wright State, while falling to then-No. 15 Notre Dame.
Senior forward Robyn Jennings leads Evansville with 14.7 ppg, while also adding 5.0 rpg. Senior guard Ashley Austin is the other player averaging double figure points for the Purple Aces with 14.0 ppg to go along with her team-best 6.3 rpg.
McNeese State is 2-3 this season, with its most-recent outing resulting in a 71-63 win over Houston Baptist this past Tuesday. The Cowgirls, who are in the Southland Conference, also have a win over Arkansas-Monticello, 89-57.
Senior forward Shante Perry is McNeese State's top scorer with 16.8 points per contest. Perry also averages 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Also scoring in double digits for the Cowgirls is freshman guard Caitlyn Baggett with 13.6 ppg. Baggett has recorded a team-high 3.4 apg as well.
Both Friday and Saturday's games will be played at the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University.
