EL PASO, Texas - UAB senior golfer Zack Sucher competed well in one of the most prestigious amateur tournaments in the nation, the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic. Sucher closed play in 10th overall in the event, which features 27 golfers, all All-Americas from the previous season.
Sucher finished the 54-hole event with an even par 213 on the par 71 El Paso Country Club. After opening the tournament with back-to-back rounds at one-over par 72, the Mobile, Ala. native rebounded with an impressive two-under par 69 to finish 10th overall in the 27-team field.
Sucher was tabbed a second-team All-America following his junior season in 2008 when he led the Blazers to an appearance at the NCAA Championships. Additionally, Sucher was tabbed the 2008 Conference USA Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference honoree.
The exclusive individual tournament, which started in 1974 and featured some of the top players in the game of golf, could have been one of the most exciting in the 35-year history of the event. Marquette's Mike Van Sickle and Oklahoma State's Trent Leon needed six holes of sudden death to decide a champion. In the end, it was Van Sickle who captured the title.
Each university that has a player participating in the tournament will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Over the past 33 years, the Sun Bowl Association has donated over $625,000 to collegiate golf through this scholarship program.
