MOBILE, Ala. - Junior guard Fatiha Salaam and senior guard Britney Jones scored 16 points each for UAB as the Blazer women's basketball team fell to the South Alabama Jaguars, 77-64, Monday evening at The Mitchell Center.
UAB moves to 1-1 overall on the year, while South Alabama improves its record to 2-0.
After UAB scored the first four points of the game, South Alabama went on an 11-0 run to take an 11-4 lead at the 15:05 mark in the first half. Sharp shooting and second-chance points by the Jaguars extended their lead to as much as 18 on two occasions in the opening half. Six unanswered points by the Blazers to close out the first half left South Alabama with a 12-point edge, 45-33, entering halftime.
UAB began to chip away at the Jaguars' lead in the second half. The Blazers narrowed South Alabama's lead to four, 52-48, on a free throw by Jones with 10:22 remaining in the game. UAB was down four at the 8:04 mark, before the Jaguars went on a 7-1 run that put them up by double digits again, 63-53, with 5:56 left. South Alabama hit key shots down the stretch to secure its lead and earn the 77-64 victory over UAB.
"We made some mistakes tonight," said UAB head coach Audra Smith. "We didn't rebound as well as we should've and because of that, we gave up too many second-chance points off of offensive rebounds.
"We also had too many turnovers, especially early in the game. Hopefully, we can learn from this game and move on. We can't dwell on this loss because we have to get ready to play Charlotte on Friday."
The Blazers shot 35.9 percent for the game, including 33.3 percent from three-point range and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe.
Salaam's career-high 16 points came on 5-of-9 shooting and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Jones scored in double figures for the second consecutive game with 16 points, while also adding seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Junior forward Tamika Dukes tallied nine points while also grabbing a game-high 11 boards for the Blazers. Junior forward/center Amanda Scott and sophomore guard Amanda Peterson chipped in eight points apiece.
South Alabama knocked down 36.8 percent of its shots overall, including 30.8 percent from beyond the arc and 86.7 percent from the free throw line.
The Jaguars were led by Shakira Nettles with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including a trio of three-point baskets. Jessica Starling scored 16 points and Karina Sproal added 15 points to South Alabama's total.
UAB will be back in action on Friday when the Blazers travel to Charlotte, N.C. to take on the Charlotte 49ers. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Halton Arena.
