BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior defender Dean Sorrell was selected as a member of the 2008 Conference USA Men's Soccer All-Academic Team, as voted on by the men's soccer SID's from around the league. Sorrell was also selected as a third-team all-conference performer earlier in the week.
"This is a terrific honor for Dean," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "Dean is one of the hardest working student-athletes and has excelled on and off the field. It is a great statement for him to earn this honor. He gives true meaning to the term student-athlete and is a great representative of our program and our university."
Sorrell is a double major in Spanish and Biology with plans to go into medical school after obtaining his undergraduate degrees. The junior defender maintains a 3.44 GPA and is the only Blazer to play every minute of every game this season.
On top of his achievements in the classroom Sorrell has been equally as impressive on the pitch. The co-captain of this year's team, Sorrell is one of only three players to have started all 18 games on the year and is the only player to have played every minute of every game this season. In fact, the Birmingham, Ala. native has played and started every game during his three-year career, and has played in 5,246 of a possible 5,382 minutes, which equates to 97 percent of action. Sorrell also anchors a defense that has allowed just 1.11 goals per game, which ranks among the top goals allowed averages in school history.
Sorrell has earned academic honors in each of his three seasons with the Blazers. He was selected to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll after both his freshman and sophomore seasons.
