HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - UAB quarterback Joe Webb threw two touchdown passes Saturday night, but the UAB football team suffered a 70-14 loss on the road against Conference USA rival Southern Miss.
The Golden Eagles (3-6, 1-4 C-USA) snapped a five-game losing streak, which was their longest in 32 years. Southern Miss improved to 9-0 all-time against UAB.
The Blazers (2-7, 1-4 C-USA) have lost four of their last five games.
Rashaud Slaughter led the UAB offense with 65 rushing yards on 12 carries. He also caught four passes for 22 yards and one of Webb's touchdown tosses. The other scoring strike went to receiver Mario Wright.
Webb finished the game 16-of-23 passing for 127 yards. Frantrell Forrest led the Blazers in receiving with 34 yards on three catches.
Austin Davis, along with running backs Damion Fletcher and Tory Harrison, led a Southern Miss offense with 49 first half points - setting a new team record.
Davis scored on runs of 10, 8, 23 and 1 yards in the first half, and also hit De'Andre Brown on a 60-yard touchdown pass.
He then added a 4-yard scoring run just over one minute into the third quarter, giving the Golden Eagles a 56-7 lead and breaking a Southern Miss record for the most touchdowns by a player in one game.
His scoring pass gave the redshirt freshman 16 touchdown passes on the season, breaking the old Southern Miss freshman mark set by Brett Favre in 1987.
Harrison, who replaced the starter Fletcher, also scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the first half, as the Golden Eagles took a 49-7 lead at halftime. He added a 69-yard scoring run in the third quarter, and finished with a game high 137 yards on 20 carries.
Fletcher ran for 86 yards on just three carries early in the game, including a career long 69 yarder, before being sidelined by a leg injury. His rushing total put him over the 1,000 yard mark for the season, and also allowed the junior to become the only player in school history to rush for over 4,000 yards in a career.
The Golden Eagles tied a team record with nine rushing touchdowns in the game.
"You have to give Southern Miss credit, they came out ready to play and we didn't," said UAB head coach Neil Callaway. "It was very embarrassing obviously in all phases of the game, I don't think we were ready to play offensively, defensively or in the kicking game tonight. I did not see this coming. I thought we practiced well just for whatever reason we did not show up and play."UAB has its second open date in three weeks next weekend before returning to action at Tulane on Nov. 15.
