Blazers In Ninth Through Two Rounds Of Jerry Pate

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's golf team carded a two-round score of 569 (287-282) and is currently in ninth overall through two rounds of the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate. The Blazers will enter Tuesday's final 18 holes just 10 strokes out of the top five.
UAB was led by senior All-American Zack Sucher, who finished the day in a tie for 15th overall with a one-under par 139 through the opening two rounds. Sucher opened the day with a one-under par 69 and followed that with an even-par 70 on the 6,934-yard Old Overton course. Sucher has now recorded five rounds of 70 or below this season.
Sophomore Jason Shufflebotham, competing in his first career tournament for the Green and Gold, showed some early nerves, finishing the first 18 holes with a five-over par 75. However, he quickly settled down and closed the day with a one-under par 69. He will enter the final day in a tie for 31st with a two-round total of four-over 144.
Sophomore Adam West and junior John Darby are in a tie for 41st overall with each shooting a 146 through 36 holes. West carded the team-low round when he fired a two-under par 68 in the morning, but struggled with a 78 in the afternoon. Darby was a little more consistent with rounds of 75 and 71. Sophomore Blake Watts rounds out the Blazers in a tie for 49th with a 148 (76-72).
Conference USA rival SMU leads the field of 12 teams going into Tuesday's final round at 13-under par, posting scores of 278-269/547. The Mustangs will have a two-shot lead ahead of tournament-host Alabama. The Crimson Tide, the tournament's defending champion, is 11-under par, shooting 278-271/549.
Auburn is third at 5-under par (287-268/555), followed by UNLV (282-276/558), while North Carolina (283-276/559) rounds out the top five.
The final round begins at Old Overton Club at 8:00 a.m. CT. Admission is free.
