TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The UAB volleyball team lost to Sacramento State, 3-0 (30-18, 30-24, 30-23), in the team's final match at the Bama Bash on Saturday. The Blazers are now 4-2 on the year, while Sacramento State improves to 6-2.
UAB junior outside hitter Ivana Bozic led the Blazers with a double-double 14 kills and 11 digs.
Junior middle blocker Casey Dent finished with seven kills on .368 hitting to earn all-tournament team recognition, while junior Lilly Domingos had six kills.
Defensively, the Blazers got a solid performance from sophomore defensive specialist Haylee Adkins who had 10 digs. Senior middle blocker Shaniquwa Cooper had three blocks at net.
Sacramento State was led by Lindsay Haupt who finished with 12 kills and 10 total blocks. Jennifer Ferguson was also impressive, going for 14 kills and nine digs.
UAB got off to an early 4-1 lead in game one following a kill by Cooper, but Sacramento State was quick to respond, coming back to take a 7-6 lead on a Ferguson kill.
Ferguson's put away sparked a six-point run that allowed the Hornets pull away to take an 11-6 lead. Sacramento State did not look back from there, rallying to win the opening game, 30-18, behind another six-point run to close out the game.
The two teams were tied at 7-7 early on in game two before another Sacramento State run helped it pull away. The Hornets won five straight points due in part to the serving of Haupt who grounded two aces in the run to help take a 12-7 lead.
UAB was able to narrow the gap late in game two, cutting the deficit to one, 19-18, after a kill by Bozic and an error on Sacramento State. From there, the Hornets would slam the door on the Blazers, pulling away for a 30-24 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Sacramento State stormed ahead to a 6-1 edge in game three before the Blazers fought back to tie the score at 10-10 following an attack error on the Hornets.
The Blazers kept things close until Sacramento State turned an 18-16 lead into a 22-17 lead by winning five-out-of-six points.
From there, Sacramento State continued to distance itself and eventually put away the game and the match with a 30-23 game three triumph.
The Blazers will next be in action on Friday when they travel to play in the Pittsburgh Invitational.
