BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB senior outfielder Phil Bell is off to a strong start with the Hyannis (Mass.) Mets in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Playing in 15 games in the outfield, Bell ranks fourth on the club in hitting with a .280 average, while leading the club in stolen bases with six. His team is currently 6-8-1 and in third place in the summer league's Western Division standings.
Shane Peterson of Long Beach State leads the club with his .373 batting average, while Bradley's Dan Brewer is second at .327 and tops the club in homers (two) and RBI (13).
Bell owns a .351 on-base percentage for the Mets and has made just one error in the outfield. His early success in the wooden bat league comes as no surprise after he hit .336 with 37 RBI and 17 stolen bases for the Blazers this past spring.
The Mets will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox at 4 p.m.
