BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Former UAB baseball speedster Steven Turner has been signed as a free agent by Major League Baseball's Chicago White Sox organization. Turner went undrafted in the 2007 MLB Draft following his senior season with the Blazers, but earned a free agent deal at a tryout camp at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., last week. The outfielder has been assigned to the single-A Great Falls (Mont.) White Sox.
Turner hit .192 with 13 stolen bases, 16 RBI and three home runs in 2007 after ranking second on the club with a .304 batting average in 2006. The Birmingham, Ala. native stole a total of 26 bases in just two seasons with the Blazers.
The Great Falls White Sox compete in the Pioneer Baseball League and are currently 20-8 and in first place in the North Division standings, holding a two-game lead over second place Helena.
Turner becomes the seventh outfielder on the Great Falls club and will first suit up with his new team this weekend when it travels to play the Ogden Raptors. Great Falls is riding a nine-game win streak into the series, while Ogden has done just the opposite, losing nine straight to enter play.
