BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Future UAB Blazer Mike Oimoen captured the Iowa Match Play Amateur Championship on Thursday, June 28. Oimoen drained an approximately 45-foot putt on the 10th green, which gave him a three-hole lead and was the definitive stroke in a 3 and 2 victory over J.D. Anderson.
"I thought (the putt) was going by," Oimoen said. "I'm just lucky it hit the hole. I was able to hit some good putts throughout the round. This (victory) is at the top of the list of my biggest wins in my career."
Oimoen comes to Birmingham as a junior college All-American golfer from Indian Hills (Iowa) Community College. Ironically, it is the same school that current UAB golfer Brad Smith attended. Oimoen earned Honorable Mention All-American accolades and was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation among junior college golfers. He closed his junior college career with a 12th-place finish at the NCAA JUCO National Championship, firing a three-over par 287 (72-70-71-74).
Oimoen also had a standout high school career, earning first team all-state honors on three occasions, as well as the 2005 Class 3A Player of the Year.
