BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore Zach Sucher is ready for competition to begin at the 2007 NCAA Men's Golf National Championships on May 30-June 2 in Williamsburg, Va., at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. Sucher, who is the first-ever UAB golfer to earn a spot in the NCAA National Championships as an individual, will tee off his championship round on the No. 10 hole at 8:55 a.m. ET.
"Zach has been working very hard on his game this past week and I feel he has certainly prepared well for this opportunity," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "He is the first UAB golfer to ever make the NCAA Championship field as an individual, so that is something he is excited about. We have made it several times as a team, but never had an individual, so he should be proud of that accomplishment. Zach just needs to play within himself, stay focused and use what got him to this point, and he will do just fine."
Sucher is one of six individuals from around the country to have made it to the national championship event as an individual. The top two finishers in each of the three Regionals whose team did not make the field, qualified for an individual spot.
Sucher earned his spot when he tied for eighth overall with a 215 (73-73-69) at the NCAA East Regional on May 17-19. Sucher, a Second-Team All-Conference USA honoree, closed play at the Regional in impressive fashion, recording five birdies and only two bogies on the final 18 holes. For the weekend, the Mobile, Ala. native collected a team-leading 13 birdies.
As a team, the UAB Blazers closed play in 14th place in the 27-team field, finishing play on the par 72, 7,017-yard Golf Club of Georgia Course with an 898 (303-299-296).
Teams will tee off on the par-71, 6,817-yard Golden Horseshoe course beginning at 7 a.m. ET Sucher will be in a group with a pair of individual qualifiers in Tim Streng of Western Illinois and Chance Pipitone of Penn.
