TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The No. 39 UAB men's golf team bettered its first round 295 by three strokes, and finished Monday's second round with a 292 to currently sit in sixth overall with an 11-over par 587 after two rounds of the Seminole Intercollegiate. Despite being in sixth place, the Blazers are just a few strokes from a top-three finish and 10 strokes behind the overall lead entering Tuesday's final 18 holes.
"We had a great start to today's round, but made some bad mistakes at the end of the day which hurt us," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "Even though we had some hiccups at the end of the round, we are not too far off from first place and we can still win this thing. We just need to finish strong, put a complete round together and the rest will take care of itself."
Sophomore Zack Sucher continues to lead the Blazers at the three-day, 72-hole event. After carding a team-low 69 that placed him in second overall after round one, Sucher again put together another solid round, shooting two-over par 74. He will enter the final 18 holes tied for sixth overall with a one-under 143 (69-74).
Senior Garrett Osborn and junior Brad Smith recorded the low rounds during the event's second day, both carding a one-under 71. Osborn vaulted to a tie for 12th with a one-over par 145 (74-71) through 36 holes, while Smith is at 149 (78-71) and tied for 35th overall.
Freshman Blake West is tied for 41st overall and is one stroke behind Smith at 150 (74-76), while Kyle Sapp rounds out UAB in 77th overall. No. 28 Northwestern is third at 584, while No. 42 Mississippi State and No. 24 Florida State are tied for fourth overall (586).
No. 12 North Carolina had the low round of the day, vaulting five spots to take the overall lead after carding seven-under 281 on the day. The Tar Heels hold a one-stroke lead over second-place Auburn (578) entering the last round of the tournament. North
