SAN JOSE, Calif. - Garret Osborn led the UAB men's golf team with a sixth-place finish at the Western Intercollegiate, but it was not enough, as the Blazers finished in 13th overall with an 879 during the two-day, 72-hole event. UAB carded rounds of 288, 291 and 300 on the par 70 Pasatiempo Golf Course.
Osborn finished the event with a one-over par 211, carding rounds of 72-67-72. It marked his best finish of the 2007 spring campaign, while the Mountain Brook, Ala. native also recorded spring low marks in 18 holes (67) and 36 holes (139) during the event. Only five golfers bettered Osborn, including tournament medalist John Streibich of Xavier University, who tied two tournament records to capture individual honors. Streibich shot a seven-under par 63 and finished with an 11-par 199 total.
The Blazers were hurt on the afternoon when junior Brad Smith withdrew midway through the final 18 holes, after recording a five over par 145 over the opening 36 holes. Smith has been one of the top golfers on the season for the Blazers, entering the event second on the team in scoring average at 73.92, including one top-10 and two top-25 finishes during the spring season.
Sophomore Zach Sucher continued his excellent play during the spring campaign, finishing tied for 29th with a 219 (70-75-74). Freshman Blake West tied for 65th with a 228 (73-77-78), while junior Kyle Sapp was one stroke back of West, closing play in a tie for 68th at 229 (76-77-76).
Purdue captured its first team title of the 2006-07 season with an 849 total. The Boilermakers took a two-stroke lead into the final round and with a 287 team score easily finished ahead of the 18-team field. California moved from seventh to second with a 288 on the final day, closing play with an 864 total. Fresno State was third at 866. Washington at 867 and San Diego and Long Beach State at 868 rounded out the top six teams.
The Blazers will have nearly a month off before they compete in the next event, the final regular season competition leading up to the 2007 Conference USA Championships. UAB will travel to Cary, N.C. where they will compete at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate on April 13-14.
