TROY, Ala. ----- UAB rightfielder Allison Davis smacked an RBI-triple over the heads of the outfielders to push the Blazers (17-12) to a 3-1 win over the Troy Trojans (17-8) in extra innings of game two at the Trojan Softball Complex.
Andrea Rogers went deep in the first inning of game one to give the Blazers an early 2-0 lead, but a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Trojans to a 4-2 win.
In game one, Rogers wasted no time putting the Blazers on the board, as she bashed a two-run shot into leftfield in the top of the first. Rogers' eighth homer of the season puts her back in a tie with shortstop Holly Krzan for the career record at UAB, each with 17 long balls.
The Trojans responded with a two-run blast of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
The two teams stayed knotted at two through the next five innings. Troy threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but the Blazers turned a double play to get out of the inning
In the top of the seventh, Leigh Walker led off with a single to get a rally going for UAB. Lindsay Stanley followed with a single and a stolen base, but the Trojans retired the last two batters to get out of the inning unscathed.
Trojan leftfielder Amanda Ragans ended the game with a two-run shot over the leftfield fence, giving Troy the 4-2 victory.
Jennifer Nelson (11-5) finished the game with three strikeouts and gave up three hits.
The Trojans struck first in the second game, putting a run across on an error and a double.
In the bottom of the second, Troy took advantage of a couple of Blazer miscues. The first batter reached on a strikeout and passed ball then advanced to second on an error. With one out and the bases loaded, Trojan centerfielder Heidi Johnson knocked a deep fly to rightfield and the runner tagged from third. Although the umpires originally called the runner safe, after a meeting the call was reversed and Davis' perfect throw to home plate ended the inning and the Trojans' threat.
With two out in the sixth, UAB put a run across to tie the game. Stanley knocked a single off the pitcher's glove then stole second. Krzan followed with a single into leftfield and Stanley ran home to make it 1-1.
Troy loaded the bases again in the bottom of the seventh, but Kayla Harris froze the final batter to get out of the jam and send the game into extra innings.
With the international tiebreaker rule in place, Allison Davis knocked a ball into the gap and legged out a triple, scoring pinch runner Ashley Thomas from second. Krzan drove Davis in with a single, icing the 3-1 victory for the Blazers.
Harris (5-4) went the distance for UAB, giving up no earned runs and striking out five.
The win marked the first extra-inning road-game triumph for UAB and the Blazers improve to 3-1 overall when playing extras.
UAB resumes conference play this weekend, hosting Marshall for a three-game series. The Blazers will play a doubleheader against the Thundering Herd on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. and round out the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
