BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB women's basketball senior Carmen Guzman was named Player of the Week by Conference USA for her efforts last week as the Blazers went 1-1 against two of the top teams in the league. Guzman averaged 22.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg, while shooting a flawless 100 percent from the free throw line (12-of-12) and .366 (15-of-41) from the field.
Guzman tallied a pair of 20-plus point outings with 24 points in UAB's win over UTEP and 21 points in the Blazers' loss to first-place Tulane. She now has a streak of 24 consecutive double-digit scoring games, a C-USA best, along with 17 games with 20-plus points.
Guzman led UAB with 24 of its 54 points to lift the Blazers over UTEP, 54-43, Thursday evening in Bartow Arena. She sunk all eight free throws and hit 7-of-17 (.412) shots from the floor, including two baskets from three-point range. She also recorded four rebounds, four assists and a game-high five steals against the Miners.
Guzman produced her third double-double of the year with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds in UAB's loss to first-place Tulane Saturday in New Orleans. She once again was perfect from the charity stripe, going 4-of-4, and hit eight buckets. Guzman also tallied a pair of assists and three steals against the Green Wave, while playing her second consecutive 40-minute game.
Guzman continues to rank among C-USA's top 10 in five categories, including first in scoring (21.7 ppg), fourth in three-point baskets per game (2.08), fifth in three-point field goal percentage (.365), eighth in steals (2.21 spg) and ninth in field goal percentage (.456). She also continues to be listed in the top 10 nationally in scoring, ranking seventh.
This is Guzman's second career player of the week honor and first of the season. UAB junior Diamond Rogers earned her first career player of the week nod last week.
