BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team won four of six singles, rallying after losing the doubles point, to defeat visiting Winthrop here Sunday, 4-3, at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.
Freshman Thomas Petrich provided the clinching singles victory at the No. 6 position as he defeated the Eagles' Thiago Barbosa, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
The Blazers also got singles wins at the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots in the lineup. Tim Bauer defeated Winthrop's Arthur Takahashi at No. 3, 6-0, 6-3 while UAB senior Kruno Despotovski downed Jorge Padilla at No. 4, 6-0, 6-2. The Blazers' final point came at No. 5 as freshman Alex Emery won in straight sets over Alejandro Portugal, 7-6 (4), 6-3).
UAB (2-2) won at No. 2 doubles as Hanns Spangenberg and Bauer teamed to defeat Portugal and Padilla, 8-7. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead after doubles with wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions.
"It was good to get a win today," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "This should be a confidence booster for us. We had two tough matches last weekend and it's good to pull out the win today. We had a freshman (Thomas Petrich) win the clinching match, and that was good to see."
UAB resumes dual match play Tuesday when it plays host to Birmingham-Southern. The match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Brook Highland.
