UAB Men's Tennis Team Defeats Southern Miss, 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ------ The UAB men's tennis team captured the doubles point, then took wins in four of six singles matches en route to a 5-2 victory here Saturday over Conference USA foe Southern Miss.
The Blazers (3-2) got the clinching point from freshman Alex Emery who outlasted Strate Krstevski, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 at the No. 5 singles position.
UAB also claimed singles wins at No. 1, 3 and 6 singles. Hanns Spangenberg posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 1 over USM's Andrew Poole while freshman Tim Bauer was a 6-3, 7-6 winner at the No. 3 position over the Eagles' Diego Machuca. Another freshman, Thomas Petrich, accounted for the Blazers' final singles point as he downed Callen Fraychineaud by a 7-5, 6-4 score.
UAB took a 1-0 lead by winning doubles matches at the No. 1 and 2 positions. At the top spot, Kruno Despotovski teamed with Thomas Weiss to defeat USM's duo of Poole and Will Thames, 8-3. UAB also won at No. 2 as Bauer and Spangenberg beat the Eagles' twins tandem of Diego and Oscar Machuca, 8-3. Southern Miss (2-4) won at No. 3 doubles as Domagoi Anic and Fraychineaud won over the Blazers' Emery and Adrian Tollstam.
UAB will be back in action Monday as the Blazers play host to Birmingham-Southern at 1:00 p.m. at the Brook Highland Racquet Club. The match is a makeup to last Tuesday's scheduled contest which was postponed due to inclement weather.
