BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB women's basketball head coach Audra Smith has added four to the roster for the 2008-09 season. Shelly Breaux, Meagan Brown, Nicole Caddell and Pearl Johnson have signed national letters-of-intent to wear the Green & Gold next year.
Breaux is a 6-1 forward from Lafayette, La. who played her prep career at St. Thomas More Catholic High School for head coach Latasha Dorsey. A versatile and agile athlete, she was named second-team Louisiana Girls Class 4A All-State as a sophomore and junior by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. During her junior campaign, Breax averaged a team-high 16.1 points and 9.8 boards per game.
"Shelly will bring a presence to our post game," said Smith. "She is a natural athlete who is a good defender, but will also give us key offensive scores in the paint."
Brown, a 6-5 center, will continue UAB's strong presence in the Birmingham area, having played at John Carroll Catholic High School. She helped the Cavaliers to an 18-8 mark a season ago, averaging 12 points and 8 rebounds per game, while shooting 48 percent from the field as a junior.
"Meagan has great size," said Smith. "She is physically strong and finishes well underneath the basket. She will provide a lot of help for us inside."
Caddell, a 6-0 guard from Tuscaloosa, Ala., played at Hillcrest High School for head coach Jerome Elliott and is spending this season at Central Park Christian High School in Birmingham. She was a vital part of Hillcrest's success during her tenure there and is currently continuing that trend for Central Park Christian as a senior.
"Nicole is a great addition to our team and will bring a lot to the table," said Smith. "She is an athletic combo guard that can play forward as well. She will add a lot of depth for us."
Johnson hails from Lady Lake, Fla. and will serve as point guard for the Blazers. Playing her high school career for head coach Mark Oates at Leesburg High School, the 5-6 guard is a speedy and talented player that is listed as one of the Class of 2008's top girl's basketball players in the state of Florida by FloridaHoops.com.
"Pearl is a tremendous point guard with great scoring ability," said Smith. "With her experience, she can run the team from the point and also be an offensive threat. She is quick and athletics and will give us the opportunity to move Britney Jones back to the two-guard, where she is most comfortable."
