BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team plays its final home football game of the 2007 season, and fourth in five weeks, Saturday when it hosts Conference USA foe UCF at Legion Field.
The Blazers (2-7, 1-4 C-USA) come into Saturday's game looking to put their past three games behind them. In those three games, UAB has fallen to three of the conference's best teams.
The Knights (6-3 4-1 C-USA) enter the game with one of the nation's top running backs in Kevin Smith. He comes into the game with the second most rushing yards per game in the country. Head coach Neil Callaway said containing Smith will be a big part of the Blazers' success.
"It's got to start with our defensive line," Callaway said. "Anytime you play a good back like that you can't let him get into space. If he does, it's awfully hard to deal with. We have to do a good job of playing our gap responsibilities and not giving him any cut back lanes."
This is the final game of the season and last chance for 17 seniors to play at Legion Field.
This will be the fifth meeting between the two teams, but only the second time since UCF joined C-USA. The Blazers come into the game after falling to Southern Miss last weekend, while the Knights enter the game following a victory over Marshall.
Saturday's Conference USA matchup between UAB and UCF will be nationally televised by CSTV at 6:30 p.m. CT.
The game will also serve as Military Appreciation Day at Legion Field. Fans with a valid military ID will receive free admission into the game.
Radio coverage of the game can be heard on the Blazers' ISP Sports Network flagship station WUHT 107.7 FM. The broadcast can also be heard on affiliates WIQR 1410 AM in Montgomery, WTRB 98.3 FM in Talladega and WACT 1420 AM in Tuscaloosa.
