Head Coach Neil Callaway
On the game:
"The biggest problem was offensively, we weren't able do anything the first half, running or throwing. It stemmed from the offensive line getting whipped at the point of attack, both running and throwing. We couldn't run the ball and get anything. We couldn't protect and give the quarterback time to do anything. Boil it down, we got whipped up front. We couldn't make anything happen."
On Southern Miss:
"I knew they were a good defense. I knew they were a good football team. I knew we would have our hands full. We just have to keep pulling together, keep competing and do the best we can do."
On UAB's defense:
"Even though we gave up 37 points, I think we did some good things at times. I think overall, defensively, they did a decent job. Southern Miss is a good running football team. They are going to get some yardage. Biggest problem tonight was upfront offensively."
On the poor performances:
"I think the last two games, we just didn't play very well. I don't think we did anything well the past two weeks. Tonight, I thought the kicking game was better, thought defensively we did some things pretty decent. We just got whipped. You got an offensive line that has a bunch of freshmen, has a bunch of people hurt, and has a bunch of walk-ons playing. Playing against the defensive line we just got whipped."
On not being bowl eligible:
"We are going to see what kind of character we have now. We're not bowl eligible; we're a struggling football team. We know we have limitations. The biggest thing I want to make sure of is that we play as hard as we can play. If we do that, that's all I can ask. If we don't, then we'll start having issues."
On having to play younger players:
"We've been playing who we thought we could play to win and that's what we are going to continue to do. When a game gets out of hand, obviously you're going to let people play. But we are going to play to win every game."
Safety Will Dunbar
On mood of the team after the loss:
"It was a tough loss, but we've got to try to keep our spirits up. This is a learning process, we've got to go through and we've just got to play better."
On difficulty of learning process:
"It's been very difficult. We have to learn a whole new system, but we're not trying to put that on why we're losing so much. It's been difficult, but we have no excuses."
On amount of Southern Miss points:
"When I go out on the field, I believe we can't be scored on and when I see something like that, it bothers me."
On Southern Miss offensive production:
"We had a lot of missed assignments and they had good field position a couple times. We've been messing up on the little stuff and they were hitting the right spots and getting a lot of yards."
On mentality for the rest of the season:
"We've got to play good. That's what we came here to do, play football. We're not just going to give up, we're going to play hard until the end of every game."
Wide Receiver Sylvester Mencer
On the mentality for the remaining games:
"We know it isn't looking good as far as bowl chances go, but we're not going to keep our heads down. We're going to go out and fight."
On the play of the younger guys:
"We do have young guys, but we're not using that as an excuse. We try to go in every game prepared and pull a win out."
On scoring the touchdown:
"I was happy for catching the touchdown, but then we had to suck it up quick and go back out there and make a few more plays."
On what Southern Miss did to give the offense troubles:
"We hurt ourselves. There were a lot of big plays that we could have made that we didn't make. The receivers could have blocked better on a couple of runs. You could say they were a little more physical than us, but it was us too. I think we just hurt ourselves."
On UAB's recent struggles:
"We have chances every game to make plays and we just have to make those plays. It's hard to win when you're not making the plays."
