BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team continued its preparations here Wednesday for Saturday's Conference USA road game at Memphis.
The Blazers (2-8, 1-5 C-USA) have two games remaining in the 2007 season and both will be played on the road. The first stop will be Saturday at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium when UAB tries to extend its win streak with the Tigers to eight games. Memphis won the first two games played in the series (1997 and 1999), but the Blazers have reeled off wins in the past seven contests.
UAB head coach Neil Callaway said he thought Wednesday's practice was better than Tuesday's workout. "Yesterday, I thought was pretty average," said Callaway. "Today, I thought it was pretty good. Now, we need to just carry it over to Saturday."
Unlike UAB's recent opponents who have emphasized potent running games against the Blazers, Memphis (5-5, 4-2 C-USA) will bring a passing game that ranks second in Conference USA (305.3) but just 10th in rushing (121.4).
"Obviously we aren't matching up well against running teams," said Callaway. "We've already proved that. Memphis does a nice job of running the football, but they are not a Southern Miss or Central Florida. Hopefully, we'll match up better against Memphis, but their receivers are good and they do an outstanding shot of throwing the football."
Saturday's game will be televised regionally on CSS.
Radio coverage of the game can be heard on the Blazers' ISP Sports Network flagship station WUHT 107.7 FM. The broadcast can also be heard on affiliates WIQR 1410 AM in Montgomery, WTRB 98.3 FM in Talladega and WACT 1420 AM in Tuscaloosa.
