BIRMINGHAM, Ala ----- The UAB football team continued work towards its Conference USA game against Southern Miss on Saturday, with a 15-period practice here Thursday.
The Blazers' (2-6, 1-3 C-USA) used the final practice as a rehearsal for the Golden Eagles (4-4 3-2 C-USA) and worked on assignments during the two-hour long practice.
This week marked a return to a more physical style of practice this week when preparing for Southern Miss and head coach Neil Callaway said revisiting that style of tempo will help
"You play the game fast so you need to practice fast," Callaway said. "Hopefully practicing this way will pay dividends for us and carry over from practice to the game."
The Golden Eagles are one of the league's best defenses and Callaway knows earning the program's first victory over Southern Miss will be a challenging one.
"I've watched Southern Miss' program for a long time and they do an outstanding job," said Callaway. "Defensively, they are in the top of our conference in almost all of the categories. Offensively, I think it all centers around the running back."
Callaway also named senior Durrell Fuqua (defense), sophomore Jake Seitz (offense) and freshman Bryant Turner (special teams) as captains for Saturday's contest.
The Blazers and Golden Eagles will kick off at 6:00 p.m. at Legion Field on Saturday. The game will be televised regionally by CSS.
Radio coverage of the game can be heard on the Blazers' ISP Sports Network flagship station WUHT 107.7 FM. The broadcast can also be heard on affiliates WIQR 1410 AM in Montgomery, WTRB 98.3 FM in Talladega and WACT 1420 AM in Tuscaloosa.
