BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team held its annual Alumni Day this past Saturday. The day began with the Dugout Club's Second Annual Golf Tournament at Highland Golf Course and closed with the program's Alumni Game at Young Memorial Field. Blazer teams from 1993, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2007 were represented in the Alumni Game.
"We were so pleased to have so many former Blazers back on our campus," said UAB head coach Brian Shoop. "It was great to have our current players see and meet them. It was great for me to meet them and see how much they enjoyed their time on our campus and how much they care about UAB baseball."
The golf tournament was won by the BP Oil team, which was captained by Chris Jones. Members of Jones' team were Ben Styes, Jerry Nelson and Chris Maronge. Styes also won the `Sonic Drive In Closest to the Pin' competition.
Attendance at this year's event was double from last year's.
"The guys expressed how much they enjoyed coming back and vowed to see this grow into a bigger event next fall," Shoop said. "We look forward to having even more of the Blazer baseball family back on campus next year."
Players from seven different Blazer teams that traveled from as far away as New Brunswick, Canada and San Francisco, Calif. participated in the Alumni Game.
"To have former players fly in from San Francisco and Miami meant a lot to me personally," Shoop said. "There is something special about getting back together with the guys you worked so hard with side by side. I hope it is special to our alumni to know how much we want and need them involved in our program today."
