Blazers Look To Continue Winning Ways, Host Marshall Saturday Evening

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team will host the Marshall Thundering Herd on Saturday, January 20 at 6 p.m. in Bartow Arena in a clash of Conference USA East Division foes. The Blazers are one of the hottest teams in C-USA at the moment, boasting a 5-1 league record and an overall mark of 10-8. Marshall has played its way to an 11-7 record, including a 4-2 mark in conference games.
Saturday will be the fourth meeting between UAB and Marshall, with Marshall holding a 2-1 in the all-time series with the Blazers. The last matchup between the two programs occurred on February 10, 2006 when Marshall topped UAB, 82-78, in Huntington, W.Va. The Blazers' last victory over the Thundering Herd was on December 18, 1995 as UAB beat Marshall, 75-60, in the South Florida Holiday Classic in Tampa, Fla.
At the helm of UAB's success is third-year head coach Audra Smith, who has guided her Blazer squad to a 10-8 overall record after beginning the season 0-6. Smith, who has posted a 31-43 record at the forefront of UAB women's basketball, has the Blazers standing in first place in Conference USA at 5-1, with their only loss coming at Southern Miss.
UAB is being led on the floor by senior Carmen Guzman, who is pacing the Blazers and Conference USA with 21.6 ppg. As of January 14, Guzman's 21.6 ppg ranked her seventh in the nation in scoring. Guzman contributes more than just points, as she also leads UAB in assists and steals with 59 and 38 respectively.
Junior Diamond Rogers has also made a name for herself this season, averaging 14.2 ppg and a team-high 7.3 rpg. Rogers, who has tallied four double-doubles on the year, has also added 44 assists, 30 steals and a team-best 18 blocks to her resume.
Marshall is headed by sixth-year head coach Royce Chadwick, who has tallied a career record of 84-79 with the Thundering Herd. Marshall is right in the middle of things in the Conference USA race with a 4-2 league record, including its most recent win over Memphis, 69-50, on Thursday evening.
Modupe Ishola is leading the Thundering Herd, averaging a double-double with 15.3 ppg and 10.1 rpg. Meagan Samis is putting up double-digit numbers as well, scoring 10.7 ppg. Leading Marshall in both assists and steals is Meg Withrow with 70 and 29 respectively, while adding 8.2 ppg.
