East Carolina Visits Bartow Arena For A C-USA Showdown Thursday Evening

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Conference USA foe East Carolina will visit Bartow Arena on Thursday, January 18 for a 7 p.m. battle on the hardwood with the UAB women's basketball team. Both squads are in the thick of the conference race, with UAB holding a 9-8 overall record and a 4-1 league mark, while ECU has an 8-10 combined record and a 3-2 C-USA mark.
UAB and East Carolina have met on eight previous occasions, with the Pirates holding the all-time series record at 5-3. Of the Blazers' three victories over East Carolina, just one has come at Bartow Arena. The only time that UAB has topped the Pirates at home was on February 7, 2005, 75-70.
During the 2005-06 season, the Blazers and the Pirates faced each other three different times. On January 6, 2006, East Carolina left Birmingham with a 59-53 victory over UAB, but the Blazers got revenge when they snatched a 96-94 overtime win from the Pirates on February 12, 2006 in Greenville, N.C.
The third and final meeting of the season was on March 2, 2006 when the two squads faced off in the first round of the Conference USA tournament in Dallas, Texas. East Carolina got a one-point victory over the Blazers, 47-46, to advance to the second round of the tournament.
This season, UAB is being led in multiple categories by senior guard Carmen Guzman, who is putting up a team-high 21.5 ppg, which leads Conference USA and ranks seventh in the country. Guzman is also leading the Blazers in assists and steals with 58 and 37 respectively.
Junior forward Diamond Rogers is pulling her weight, averaging 14.2 ppg and a team-best 6.9 rpg. Rogers has also added 42 assists, 27 steals and a team-high 15 blocks on the year.
East Carolina is being paced by Cherie Mills with team-best numbers in both scoring (14.3 ppg) and rebounds (6.6 rpg). Jasmine Young is contributing 12.9 ppg while leading the Pirates in both assists and steals with 89 and 51 respectively. The third Pirate in double figures is LaCoya Terry, who is adding 11.1 ppg to East Carolina's effort.
