Blazers Earn Pair of Shutouts at Mercer Bear Brawl

MACON, Ga. - The UAB volleyball team ran its win streak to three on Friday by winning a pair of matches at the Mercer Bear Brawl to improve to 6-3 on the year. The Blazers shut out Nicholls State, 3-0, in their first match of the day after hitting an astounding .434 for the match. In match two, UNC Asheville found itself on the short end of a 3-0 decision as UAB sophomore outside hitter Ivana Bozic turned in her fifth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 16 digs, both match highs.
Against Nicholls State, sophomore setter Nevena Stefanov finished with 47 assists, marking the highest total in a three-game match for the Blazers this season. Junior outside hitter Fernanda Domingos and sophomore outside hitter Aleksandra Vujovic tied for a match-high 14 kills. Both players hit over .500 for the match as Domingos hit .542 on 24 attack attempts, while Vujovic hit .591 on 22 attack attempts.
For the second straight match, the Blazers got a strong all-around defensive effort as nine players finished with two or more digs as junior libero Brianna Galvin set the pace with 11. UAB held Nicholls State to a .103 hitting performance.
Against the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville, Bozic led the way with her double-double, while junior middle blocker Casey Dent made a strong impact as well with 12 kills and three blocks. Stefanov had a match-high 44 helpers.
Galvin chipped in with 11 digs, while Domingos had nine kills on .444 hitting. As a team, UAB hit .318 for the match compared to UNC Asheville's .089.
UAB outscored its opponents by an average of 11.5 points on Friday to improve its season average to a +6.7 margin of victory in the opening frame. The Blazers are 6-2 when winning game one this season.
Next up for the Blazers will be their final match at the Mercer Bear Brawl on Saturday when it plays Mercer at 1:00 p.m.
