UAB Splits Final Two Matches at Elon Classic

ELON, N.C. - The UAB volleyball team split its final two matches at the Elon Volleyball Classic on Saturday, beating Elon 3-0 (30-27, 30-23, 30-20) before losing to unbeaten TCU, 3-1 (20-30, 30-24, 30-16, 30-18). Sophomore setter Nevena Stefanov eclipsed the 1,500 assists milestone with 72 assists in the Blazers two matches to give her 1,510 helpers for her career. UAB will now return home for its home opener against Troy at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Sophomore outside hitter Ivana Bozic led the team in kills in both matches on Saturday, while freshman setter Haylee Adkins had 21 digs in the two contests.
The Blazers beat the Phoenix of Elon in straight games in its first match of the day behind a 15-kill performance from Bozic who had her streak of double-double performances come to an end at four as she finished with eight digs and five blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Casey Dent had a standout performance as well with a career-high seven blocks to go along with seven kills.
Other key contributions against Elon came from Adkins who had 11 digs and while Stefanov who had 30 assists. Junior libero Brianna Galvin was strong defensively for the Blazers with nine digs.
In UAB's loss to TCU, Bozic had a team-high 19 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Aleksandra Vujovic had 11. As a team, the Blazers hit .500 in the first game of the match and had no hitting errors in that frame. Junior outside hitter Fernanda Domingos had nine kills, while hitting .390 for the match.
UAB, 3-3, will next be in action on Wednesday when it hosts Troy for its home opener at Bartow Arena at 7 p.m.
