BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team attempted a valiant comeback in the second half, but fell short and lost to the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern, 2-1, on Monday evening at the BSC Soccer Park. The 2-0 deficit going into halftime proved too much for the Blazers, who fell to 2-6 overall on the season while Birmingham-Southern saw its record move to 4-6.
This marked the first time that the Panthers have earned a win over UAB in women's soccer, as the all-time series record between the two schools now stands at 5-1 in favor of UAB.
The first goal of the evening came in the 31st minute of the game, when UAB freshman Danielle Blair accidentally knocked in an own goal to put Birmingham-Southern on the board, 1-0.
That rare incident gave the Panthers momentum in the game, which they used to score their second goal of the match. Serena Murphy scored off a Brittany Lyons assist in the 34th minute to make the score 2-0 in favor of BSC heading into halftime.
Although the score did not reflect the stats, the Blazers out-shot the Panthers in the first half, 9-7. UAB forced BSC goalkeeper Brittany Green to make five saves in the first half, while UAB goalkeeper Julie McFarlane nabbed three saves.
The Blazers returned to the field in the second half with intensity and an offensive attack that put them on the board in the 83rd minute of the contest. Junior Sally Palmer recorded her second goal of the season when she knocked in a goal that was rebounded off of previous shot by freshman Rachael Axon.
Down by one with just over six minutes remaining in the game, the Blazers attempted to take the game into overtime, but eventually ran out of time.
UAB dominated the shot count in the second half, taking seven shots to Birmingham-Southern's two shots. Overall, UAB had 16 shots compared to BSC's eight during the contest.
McFarlane (2-3) had four total saves on the night while Green grabbed seven saves to preserve the victory for the Panthers.
The Blazers' next game will be on Friday, September 29 when they begin their Conference USA schedule by hosting Marshall in a 7 p.m. match at West Campus Field.
