BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The 2006-07 schedule of the UAB women's basketball team includes 12 non-conference matchups, followed by 16 Conference USA games on the slate for the upcoming season.
Third-year head coach Audra Smith and company are looking to make their way through the competition and make a run at the C-USA championship.
"This is definitely the most competitive schedule we've had since I've been here," said Smith. "I believe that you have to play the best to be the best. We have goals each year of competing for the conference championship and earning an invitation to the NCAA tournament. This schedule will help prepare us to meet those goals."
The Blazers open their season on November 12 against ACC opponent Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. They follow that with a trio of home games against Ole Miss, Louisiana-Monroe and UT-Chattanooga before playing Jackson State on the road on November 27. A pair of SEC opponents await UAB next with a home game against Vanderbilt on November 30 and a road game at Mississippi State on December 3.
UAB will once again host its annual UAB tournament on December 18-19, which will feature the Blazers, Florida Atlantic, Alabama State and Hampton. A home matchup with Virginia Tech is on the slate for December 21, just before the Christmas holiday.
The Blazers will round out their non-conference schedule by traveling to Charlottesville, Va. to compete in the Cavalier Classic at the University of Virginia. The tournament will be held December 28-29 and will include Virginia, UAB, Northwestern State and Maine.
"Our non-conference schedule is tough," commented Smith. "We are playing multiple teams that played in the postseason last year, both the NCAA tournament and the WNIT. We are excited about the opponents that we have lined up and we really believe that it will get us ready for an exceptionally competitive C-USA schedule."
UAB will begin the Conference USA portion of its schedule on January 2 at Memphis. The Blazers will take part in home-and-home contests with Memphis, UCF, Southern Miss, East Carolina and Marshall during the season. Tulane, Rice and Houston will all play host to the Blazers, while Tulsa, SMU and UTEP must make the trip to Birmingham.
"Our conference has a lot of talent," expressed Smith. "Most teams have the majority of their players returning from last year and have brought in some really good freshmen and transfers as well.
"The season is rapidly approaching. We are optimistic and eager about the upcoming season and look forward to an outstanding year of basketball."
