GREENSBORO, N.C. - Despite making its third consecutive tournament championship game in as many weekends, the No. 17 UAB men's soccer team once again fell short, dropping a 2-0 decision to undefeated Elon. With the loss, the Blazers fall to 3-2-1 on the season, while Elon looks to crack the top 25 at 6-0-1.
The Pheonix began the scoring in the 41st minute, when Kiki Willis was able to beat UAB goalkeeper Jeremy Drake. Elon's Justin Wyatt sent the ball to Willis at the top of the box. Willis then sidestepped Drake, and blasted the ball 15 yards out into the back of the net for his third goal of the season. Elon held the 1-0 lead and the 6-0 shot advantage going into halftime.
In the 66th minute of the match, Elon's Nick Aparicio scored his second goal of the season and put the Phoenix up 2-0. Aparicio stole the ball from a Blazer at midfield and took it all the way for the goal.
Drake recorded five saves for the Blazers.
UAB will look to return to winning ways when it competes at the Jim 'N Nicks/Puma BSC Classic, hosted by crosstown rival Birmingham-Southern. Action begins Friday when the Blazers take on College of Charleston at 5 p.m., followed by BSC versus Stetson at 7:30 p.m. at the BSC Soccer Park.
