BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB head women's basketball coach Audra Smith has announced the signing of Fatiha Salaam for the 2006-07 season. Salaam, a native of Atlanta, signed with the Blazers out of W.D. Mohammed High School.
"Fatiha is an outstanding young lady," said Smith. "She is a tremendous student with tremendous leadership qualities. We're excited about her joining the Blazer family. She is an exceptional shooter who can slash to the basket. Fatiha just completed a very successful high school career at W.D. Mohammed, leading her team to the postseason for the first time in school history. I am confident that Fatiha is going to help us continue to improve as a team."
Salaam was named first-team all-state Class A by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution after averaging 17.2 points, 5.8 assists, 6.5 rebounds and 5.0 steals per game as a senior. She was also a member of the 2005 Georgia Metros which won the under-16 national championship, as well as the junior national championship. W.D. Mohammed finished the 2005-06 season with an overall mark of 22-2 and a perfect 12-0 in region action. Additionally, the Lady Caliphs advanced to the Sweet 16 of the Georgia state tournament, their first-ever postseason. Salaam, a 5-9 guard, was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Farad Abdur-Rahman.
Salaam is the fourth player signed by Smith, joining Amanda Scott (Vinemont, Ala.), Brittany Davidson (Meridian, Miss.) and Erica Simpson (Gary, Ind.), who signed in the early signing period.
