AUBURN, Ala. -- The UAB men's golf team saw its team score balloon to a 310 in Sunday's third and final round of the 19th Annual Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate hosted by Auburn University. After initial rounds of 303 and 302, the 915 total put UAB in 10th place out of 11 teams in the event.
Garrett Osborn was UAB's top finisher, but the talented junior struggled to a six-over par 78 Sunday to finish with rounds of 74-73-78 for a 12-over 225. He was tied with three others for 24th on the individual leaderboard.
"We came into Sunday intending to move one way on the leaderboard and wound up moving the other way," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "It's frustrating, as has been our spring with some up-and-down play after such a strong fall. But, we know we have what it takes to compete and to win tournaments. We just have to find that rhythm again before next week."
Freshman Josh Thompson (75-75-78=228, T-31st), sophomore Kaylor Timmons (80-78-77=235, T-49th), senior Clark Brown (77-76-82=235, T-49th) and sophomore Kyle Sapp (77-84-77=238, T-54th) also competed for the Blazers.
Host Auburn took the team title in the event with a four-under par 860 team total on its home course. Charlotte, Ole Miss, Southeastern Loisiana and North Florida rounded out the top five. Memphis, Mercer, Jacksonville State and Mississippi State finished ahead of UAB. The Blazers bettered the College of Charleston in the standings.
Auburn's Stuart Moore rode his eight-under par 64 in Saturday's second round to a seven-under par tournament total and individual medalist honors. Glenn Northcutt and Andrew Medley of Auburn were tied for second in the event, seven strokes behind Moore. Jame Howarth of Ole Miss and Charlotte's Matt Mincer rounded out the top five finishers.
Kaufman's squad heads to Gulfport, Miss., to compete in the 2006 Conference USA Men's Golf Championships next weekend. The league tournament will be played at the Grand Bear Golf Club Monday through Wednesday, April 17-19 with the team winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
