AUBURN, Ala. -- Junior Garrett Osborn's two-over 74 paced UAB's efforts Friday at the 19th Annual Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate hosted by Auburn University. Osborn is tied for 13th on the individual leaderboard. UAB is in seventh place out of 12 teams in the event.
"We got off to a little bit of a slow start, but are just 13 shots out of the lead," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "We have a history of getting better as tournaments go on, so we should still be in good shape heading into the second and third rounds."
Host Auburn has the team lead with a two-over team score of 290 after one round in the three-day, 54-hole event on the par-72, 7,275-yard Auburn University Course. Charlotte is two shots back in second. Memphis, Southeastern Louisiana, Jacksonville State and Ole Miss round out the top five places with JSU and the Rebels tied for fifth at 300. UAB is in seventh at 303 with North Florida, Mississippi State, the College of Charleston, Mercer and South Alabama rounding out the field.
Andrew Medley of Auburn and Memphis's Ian Rochester shot two-under 70s Friday to take the early individual lead.
In addition to Osborn, freshman Josh Thompson fired a three-over par 75 for UAB. Kyle Sapp and Clark Brown shot identical 77s and Kaylor Timmons shot an 80 for the Blazers.
The UAB quintet tees off early Saturday for the tournament's second round.
