WEST POINT, Miss. -- All-Conference selection Garrett Osborn shot one-under 71 Wednesday to solidify his second straight fifth place finish in the Conference USA Men's Golf Championships. The UAB junior's four-under par 212 for the 54-hole tournament put him in a four-way tie for fifth place. SMU captured the 2006 C-USA team title. UAB finished sixth in the 12-team field.
Osborn, who was also named first team All-Conference USA Wednesday, was tied with Mitch Cohlmia and Same Korbe of Tulsa and Rice's Kyle Kelley. It is the second straight all-tournament finish for Osborn, who also placed fifth at last year's championships. SMU's Will Dodson was the tournament's individual champion after rounds of 70-68-65 for an eye-popping 13-under par on the par-72, 7,200-yard Old Waverly Golf Course. UAB freshman Zack Sucher's two-under 70 on Wednesday put the Mobile, Ala., product in a tie for ninth place after a 54-hole score of 213.
"We're certainly pleased with Garrett's performance and with Zack surging toward the end," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "We knew coming into the day that we would have to have at least four of our five playing under-par golf and that didn't happen. Now all we can do is wait on the regional committee's selections and see if we can keep playing. I'm disappointed we didn't finish better, but our effort was there and I'm proud of that."
UAB finished just four strokes behind second-round co-leader Houston for fifth place after carding a 292 team score Wednesday. The Blazers finished with rounds of 286-291-292 to notch a 54-hole score of 869 for the event. Memphis, which led each of the first two rounds, dropped off to fourth place at 856. Tulsa was three shots better in third, UCF placed second with an 851. SMU's championship score was comprised of rounds of 278-291-276 for an 845 or 19-under par team total.
Fellow UAB freshman Josh Thompson, who was tied with Osborn in fifth place after each of the first two rounds, carded a five-over 77 Wednesday and dropped to a tied for 22nd place overall. Kaylor Timmons trimmed two strokes from his pair of 76s Monday and Tuesday. He finished 10-over par, 226 and tied for 44th overall. Senior Clark Brown rounded out his UAB career with three straight 78s.
Both UAB as a team and Osborn as an individual will now await NCAA Regional pairings which are announced Monday, May 8. Should UAB not qualify as an at-large team participant, Osborn could be one of three at-large individuals invited to participate in the NCAA East Regionals, May 18-20 at the Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Orlando, Fla.
