WESTPORT, Miss. -- The UAB men's golf team recorded one of its most impressive fall seasons in school history this year with four top three finishes in five events. This spring, Alan Kaufman's club has been up and down. The Blazers look to recapture their fall magic as they shoot for the 2006 Conference USA title at the par-72, 7,000-yard Old Waverly Golf Club Monday through Wednesday.
UAB gave serious chase to eventual champion TCU in last year's C-USA tournament before dropping into fourth place in the tournament. Garrett Osborn finished fifth in the event and was the only non-TCU golfer on the all-tournament team. Clark Brown, UAB's lone senior this year, tied for 11th in last year's championships as well.
"Hopefully, our performance last year will give us a point of reference for how to attack things this time," Kaufman said. "We were in it right up until the last round in 2005 and pushed TCU pretty good. We've got to stay focused and finish this year and we can put some pressure on the other teams. We're capable of winning this thing if all five players clear their minds and play the way they are capable of playing."
Head-to-head the Blazers have a 7-6 record against league foes this year and are 3-3 against Conference USA in spring play. Memphis finished ahead of UAB in the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate at Auburn University last week. The Blazers have head-to-head wins over ECU, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulsa, Tulane and UCF this year and losses to Memphis, UCF, Tulsa and SMU.
Kaufman will send Osborn, Brown, Kaylor Timmons, Josh Thompson and Zack Sucher to the tees for the C-USA tournament. The event runs 18 holes each day, Monday through Wednesday. The winner receives an automatic bid to NCAA Regionals later this month.
